As a special TV series that commemorates the 46th anniversary of MBC, “Lee San”
(Writer Kim Lee-young, Co-directors Lee Byung-hoon and Kim Geun-hong) posted a
TV rating of 31.3% (rated by TNS, Seoul viewers only) to post its highest TV
ratings so far.
Lee San premiered on September 17, 2007 with a modest showing after capturing only 14.2% of all viewers in its primetime slot but it gradually gained momentum and increased its ratings through the excellent story development in each episode and solid acting performances by a seasoned cast of actors. The talents of the director also helped lift the ratings. On October 30, 2007, Lee San posted higher ratings than a competing show on another network that premiered three weeks earlier than Lee San. Many people in the industry were surprised at these results because it is normally difficult to narrow the gap with a leading show that already has an established viewership base.
Lee San is now entering the middle part of its storyline and in a recent episode, King Young-jo (actor Lee Sun-jae) stumbles upon the revelation that his wife, Empress Jung-soon (actress Kim Yeo-jin), is the de facto leader of the Noron Faction that has been his political enemy for years The subsequent actions undertaken by King Young-jo’s (actor Lee Sun-jae) change the tone of the politics in the palace. San (actor Lee Seo-jin) becomes deeply disappointed in his grandfather, King Young-jo, when the king tries to cover up past incidents planned by the Noron Faction although he himself was the target in most of the cases. San visits his childhood friends Dae-soo (actor Lee Jong-soo) and Song-yeon (actress Han Ji-min) in a drunken stupor and asks them to return to the palace. Meanwhile, Queen Hyo-eui (actress Park Eun-hye) and Princess Hye-bin (actress Gyeon Mi-ri) misunderstand Song-yeon when they hear about the rumor that San invited Song-yeon back to the palace.
King Young-jo appoints San to the task of repairing relationships between the high-ranking and low-ranking ministers and orders Hong Guk-young (actor Han Sang-jin) to help San get to the bottom of the Naryehee incident and punish all the conspirators who were involved in it. However, San proposes a centrist policy that will have the effect of keeping the Noron Faction in check.
Featuring an exciting story arc inspired by historical events with reality-like situations, Episode 31 and 32 of “Lee San” will air at 9:55pm on January 1, 2008.
