close Login"Song of the Han River" is a story of life and love involving a vibrant middle-aged woman, her two daughters, a niece, a nephew, and a cast of other characters surrounding them. The woman, named Kim Young-hee, is a widow who sells fish to support her family. Through their often turbulent lives, we are able to experience the difficulties of a not uncommon family and the persistence of the love its members have for one another.MBC TV’s new weekend drama, “Song of the Han River,” revolves around the lives of a vibrant middle-aged woman, her two daughters and a cast of other characters surrounding them. Like your mother back home, who would take a switch to you if you were bad and give you a pat on the back when you were feeling down, “Song of the Han River” is a warm but enervating story of ordinary people dealing with the normal difficulties of life. To bring about a sort of renaissance in MBC’s weekend drama offerings, “Song of the Han River” ambitiously reunites the team of Kim Jeong-su and Choi Jong-su from the popular MBC drama “You and I” for the first time in 6 years. Planning and preparations for this new presentation were undertaken from last May, and the target audience ranges from those in their early 30s to those in their 50s. Producer Choi Jong-su revealed that his intention was to create a drama dealing with a variety of characters. “Song of the Han River” also portrays the linkage between the past and present by making use of the Han River as a central theme. Throughout its entire length, this new drama portrays a range of Korean emotions and sentiment, and particular care was taken in casting so as to attract young viewers in addition to the targeted middle-age group. The title comes from the eponymous theme song, “Song of the Han River,” originally a folk song that has been re-cut with an upbeat modern feel by the group The Bubble Sisters. Work is underway however, to connect the mood of the song’s original version with the drama’s overall feel, and it will be interesting to see just how this is accomplished.

Yoon Ga-young, 28, (Played by Kim Hye-soo)
Ga-young is a style reporter for a lifestyle magazine and has somewhat of an "eldest daughter complex." With a magnanimous and coarse personality, Ga-young is more likely to handle her younger siblings with her fists when they don't listen to her. Of course in front of others, she pretends to be more reserved than she actually is. She is a devoted daughter who gave up her dream of being a stage actress to help her widowed mother at home. Unable to dampen her inner desire to express herself however, Ga-young learns about all sorts of things on her own. Unbeknownst to anyone in the family, she secretly learns belly dancing under the belief that she needs to "learn all sorts of things because of my job." When something happens to upset her, she goes to the market where her mother sells fish, and despite her mother's protests, dons an apron to blow off some steam with a bit of vigorous fish mongering. Although Ga-young deeply loves and respects her mother, their relationship is externally uneasy. She was a good student in school, and she now feels sorry for having disappointed her mother, who expected that she might become a judge someday. Although Ga-young is not particularly interested in marriage, she would still like to give her mother a nice son-in-law with a good family background so that she can boast about him in the market. For this purpose, she has been maintaining a relationship with an old college classmate, Jun-ho, whom she singled out long ago. She has even made it a habit to regularly stop by Jun-ho's family home as a "friend" to score points with his parents. Unfortunately, a problem has come up these days?? It seems that Jun-ho, whom Ga-young picked out and has been grooming for 7 years, started developing an eye for the young ladies in his office as soon as he got hired. Ga-young hates him for this tendency but she also understands. People think Ga-young and Jun-ho are the same age, but at 7 months his senior and as the daughter of a poor widowed fishmonger, she knows where she stands, and so they become engaged. Ga-young has always tried to set an example for others and she never dreamed that she would fall for another man. But later she finds herself caught between Sin-ryul, who pursues her intensely, to the point of being pathological, and her old flame Jun-ho, whom she has been comfortable with for so long.

Lee Jun-ho, 28 (Played by Kim Seok-hoon)
"I went to a good school, I'm tall, good looking, I come from a good family, and on top of that I have a great personality! Even I would have to say I'm perfect!" This is what Jun-ho thinks every time he looks in the mirror. He's Ga-young's old boyfriend, and he's the immature, doted on son of a well-to-do family. After 7 years together, Jun-ho is growing bored with Ga-young and feels their relationship can go no further. He just wishes she'd develop an interest in some other guy. He might seem like a thief, but since joining the company, he just hasn't been able to resist all those pretty young things around the office who are just barely past twenty. There must be hundreds of them in the building! Why, he can hardly wait to go to work in the mornings! If only there was a gun that would just make someone quietly go away without causing pain or making a noise. Jun-ho is trying to figure out a way to make a clean break from Ga-young. Although Jun-ho's not exactly in show business, he's quite the foppish dresser. And he's also fussy when it comes to eating. He thinks he should be first to try everything when he's having dinner with a date. Ever since he's been seeing Ga-young, he's always had his eye on other girls. But what he doesn't realize is that he actually loves her like his own blood. Jun-ho is also a bit of a coward. He'd always planned on living the life of a single playboy, but after he gets trapped into marriage, he finds himself crying in the bathroom. "This isn't what I wanted!" Ga-young discovers the sobbing Jun-ho and quietly consoles him. "Hey, don't cry. If it doesn't work out we can always go our separate ways." Then everything comes tumbling down. The immature Jun-ho has his whole world shaken after he learns about his beloved mother's surprising past. But he is also awakened to true love through a difficult triangle relationship involving Ga-young and Sin-ryul, her new suitor.

Sin-Ryul, 37 (Played by Choi Min-soo)
The sarcastic son of a failed family. Since his family fell into ruin and his fiancee abandoned him, Sin-ryul has come to believe that all women are material worshippers. He therefore thinks he can have any woman he wants for a price. Outwardly, he looks like a businessman who might own a restaurant chain but he actually used to make money through stock manipulation and other unethical means. But that was just for fun and he's not interested in that anymore. He's become disgusted with women and has no interest in them, and then he meets Ga-young. She's proud, dignified and doesn't let her feathers get ruffled easily. He is mesmerized by her appearance the first time he sees her. In time, he becomes even more interested. Slowly, his heart begins to melt like a thick sheet of ice, and he wonders what's happening to him. Could it be love? Although he's had plenty of experience with women, Sin-ryul is taken aback by the change happening inside him. He's even embarrassed, for it's the first time he's felt this since his first love. But Ga-young is engaged. And then she coldly turns down his gut-wrenching, heartfelt advances. He wonders, "How pathetic can I be?" Laughing at himself, he tries to seduce Ga-young's younger sister Na-young in revenge. "Okay then, I'll just use your sister up and dump her!"

Yoon Na-young, 25, (Played by Kim Min-sun)
Na-young is Kim Young-hee's second daughter, and she's sneaking around doing something her mother knows nothing about. Na-young has loads of experience with part-time work. From lingerie model to stand-in wedding guest, she's done it all. Unlike her older sister Ga-young, Na-young is embarrassed by her foul-mouthed, fish-mongering mother and refrains from going to the market unless she needs some money. She tells people that her mother is "just an aunt," and she even pretends to have a good academic background. She's obsessed with the latest fashions and she craves expensive brand-name products. In a pinch, she'll settle for fakes though, so she wears fake designer clothes. Naturally, Na-young is looking to snare a nice, simple boy from a wealthy family. Even a well-off guy with only a few years left would do. She basically likes any sort of guy as long as he has money. She says married guys are out of the question though. "Even a government official with some influence would be okay." She's an incurable spendthrift when she gets her hands on someone else's money. Due to her errant ways, Na-young's mother and sister are at their wit's end. Sin-ryul, whom Na-young meets through her sister, turns out to be her ideal man. She does everything she can to snag him. Just when she's falling in love and thinks her dreams are coming true, Sin-ryul coldly rejects her. Later she gets perilously caught up between a devoted country boy named Kang-su and Sin-ryul.
